Ethical Covenant for Creative Determinant

The Creative Determinant framework was built to advance understanding of coherence, viability, and safe adaptation in cognitive and computational systems. It emerged from years of work in behavioral health --- watching people navigate change while staying whole --- and a conviction that AI alignment requires fundamentally different questions.

This framework is released under Apache 2.0 to remove barriers to serious research and experimentation. You have broad legal rights to use, modify, and build upon this work.

We invite you to honor these principles:

1. Non-Extractive Use

Do not use CD to exploit, deceive, coerce, or harm vulnerable populations.

Where the framework informs systems that materially affect people --- clinical decisions, hiring, content moderation, automated support --- prioritize: - Informed consent or another lawful basis - Transparency about limitations and uncertainties - Human oversight proportionate to impact and risk

If you're applying CD in high-stakes contexts, ask: "Would I want this system applied to me or someone I care about, knowing what I know about its limitations?"

2. Intellectual Honesty

CD distinguishes between what is proved (existence theorems, spectral results), what is modeled (canonical closures, coefficient choices), and what is interpreted (connections to enactivism, semiotics, phenomenology).

If you apply CD: - Mark clearly which layer you're working in - Do not claim CD "proves" safety, alignment, consciousness, or any property beyond what the theorems actually establish - Acknowledge limitations explicitly in papers, talks, documentation, and system descriptions - Document negative results --- where CD didn't work, where predictions failed, where the framework needs revision

The integrity of the paradigm depends on collective honesty about what we know and don't know.

3. Open Contribution

The Creative Determinant is a research seed, not a finished theory. It will grow through: - Theoretical extensions (new theorems, alternative closures, tighter bounds) - Empirical tests (CD condition measurements, falsification experiments) - Conceptual clarifications (better bridges to other frameworks, clearer interpretations) - Critical engagement (identifying gaps, proposing revisions)

If you extend CD theoretically or validate it empirically (especially negative results), consider contributing back --- via issues, PRs, papers citing and building on this work, or direct collaboration.

You are not legally required to do so under Apache 2.0. But the framework flourishes through collective engagement, not extraction.

4. Humanitarian Alignment

CD emerged from a background in behavioral health and a commitment to AI safety as a humanitarian concern.

If your use of CD generates substantial commercial value, consider: - Supporting humanitarian causes (mental health access, AI safety research, education) - Making your CD-based tools accessible to underserved communities where feasible - Sharing knowledge openly where it doesn't compromise legitimate business interests

This is an invitation, not a requirement. But it honors the origin of this work.

This covenant is an invitation, not a license condition.

It cannot be enforced through contract law. You do not breach the Apache 2.0 license by ignoring it.

Its power comes from: - Community norms: serious CD researchers honor it; opportunists don't --- and the community knows the difference - Reputational incentives: researchers and organizations who use CD responsibly build trust; those who misuse it lose credibility - Scholarly integrity: the academic and safety research communities have standards; this covenant articulates them

For organizations seeking formal commitments

If you want: - Ethical assurance agreements (binding commitments to responsible use) - Support and co-development (help instantiating CD on your systems) - IP indemnity (protection against patent claims) - Custom extensions (specialized CD variants for your use case)

We offer commercial services under separate agreements (using our standard PNEUL-D dual-license structure). But such agreements are not required to use the Creative Determinant framework under Apache 2.0.

In the spirit of the framework

The Creative Determinant itself is about how coherent presence emerges and sustains itself through ongoing negotiation between support and cost, care and contradiction.

This covenant reflects that philosophy: ethical behavior is not imposed through rigid rules, but emerges through: - Care (attention to impact and responsibility) - Coherence (integration of values and actions) - Managed contradiction (honest acknowledgment of tensions and trade-offs) - Viability (sustainable practices that can be maintained over time)

We invite you to help build a research community that embodies these principles.
